Tips for Birthday Party Season

Throughout the summer, my fridge has slowly been taken over by birthday party invitations from my daughter’s classmates. While this is met with excitement, there are so many parents that encounter the dreaded “what do we bring for a gift” conversation. Over the past few years, I have developed a few rules for our gift giving and gift receiving for birthday parties. I hope these can help alleviate the stress for you too!

Gift ideas when hosting a birthday party:

  • If you do not want any gifts, state “no gifts” on the invitation

  • So many lovely folks ENJOY gift giving, they may ask if there’s something specific you’d like

  • If you do want gifts, make a registry and add it to the invitation. It makes it easier for everyone involved!

Gift ideas when attending parties:

  • If invitation does not indicate whether or not to bring a gift, here are some organizer-approved gift ideas:

    • Gift card to local toy store: My favorite on the Seacoast is Noggin Factory! This takes the guesswork out of choosing a gift and they can pick something perfect!

    • Local art: Our entire family loves One Lane Studios- one of my best friends got my daughter the Phoebe print for her birthday and we are obsessed. Art is the gift that keeps on giving, and they will cherish it for many years to come.

    • Gift card to an ice cream shop/ bakery: They can keep the birthday celebration going even after the party ends.

    • Gift card to a local cafe: tell them they can take their parents out for a family date. We all know how much work parents do to throw these parties, let’s give them a little treat too.
